The notion that soundholes in the soundboard imply that the instrument uses a box construction: fig. 247 shows an instrument in the Pitt Rivers Museum which has elaborate soundhole, yet is clearly built on a plank.

Howie Mitchell has made two similar instruments (1), and the Italian angel in fig. 17 also seems to be playing a dulcimer built of a board, but with intricate soundholes.
