Marcuse
(6) says that "they survive as Cimbal in Appenzell",
a statement which is not borne out by Brigitte Geiser nor by my own
visits to that province; all the evidence collected in the present study
suggests that in the German language the name Cimbal and its
variants are only used by theoretical writers, not by players, so that,
even if someone wrote of 'Cimbal' in Appenzell, for Dr. Marcuse
to say that "they survive as Cimbal in Appenzell' i.e. that
the Appenzellers call their instruments Cimbals, is misleading.
